Our Man in the Moone is a twelve-month heritage and arts project that focuses on the first – and most extraordinary – work of science fiction: published in 1638, “The Man in the Moone” was written by Bishop Francis Godwin while living here in Whitbourne village.
“It is an exciting and remarkable tale of lunar travel and utopian vision. Drawing on the latest news of travel and warfare from the Atlantic to China and on the latest theories in magnetism, astronomy, and navigation, the story offers an unparalleled window onto its intellectual and cultural world.”
Simon Schaffer, University of Cambridge.
Project activities include:
- A Whitbourne book group to explore the story and its many themes
- Introductory tours and training at the Worcestershire and Herefordshire Archives and Bromyard Historical Society
- A community performance project of dance, aerial dance, story-telling and theatre for people of all ages and abilities (2019)
Our Man in the Moone is supported by Heritage Lottery Fund, Herefordshire Community Foundation, Elmley Foundation, Whitbourne Community Shop Fund and Susan Bulmer
